RJFTA’s Yorkdale Mural Blessing Ceremony on Saturday, September 17th, 2022 from 11:00AM to 2:00PM @ Yorkdale Elementary School’s playground located at 5657 Meridian Street Los Angeles, CA 90042 (Please enter on Avenue 57)
We are happy to introduce this beautiful new mural at Yorkdale Elementary school here in Highland Park, Los Angeles! We are grateful to all the students, teachers, children, and familias who came out to join in on the fun! Its was heartwarming and so special to see so many parents and teachers come out to paint with their children. We can see how art has the power to unite communities far and wide in such tumultuous times.
A big Thank you to our lead artist Miranda Villanueva (@blissful_nana) and her sister Celina Villanueva (@shoo_ina) for such an amazing design and tribute to Highland Park’s landmarks, legends and Champs such as FHS Panthers High school football team🐾, Villas Tacos best taco in LA back to back (@villastacos), American Legion Hall (Ave 55), and vintage Penny’s Burgers to name a few. A big THANK YOU and shout out to Oxy Arts (@OxyArts), Highland Park Neighborhood Council (@HHPNC), Occidental College Intercultural Center (@Oxy_ICC), principle Gabriel Mendez, and the Restorative Justice for the Arts Mural Youth Team for all their dedication and contributions in this wonderful community art project! RJFTA will be applying a protective clear coat on this mural so that many more children will enjoy this mural for generations to come.
The Migrant Farm Workers mural by Daniel Cervantes was whitewashed by Garvanza Elementary under the supervision of current school principal, Sara Gilman during National Hispanic Heritage month. This mural was funded by The Cesar Chavez Foundation. Please join us for our community vigil this Friday, Oct 25. We will meet at Garvanza Park, closest are to Ave 63 and Repton. We will be starting at 4pm and allow time for reflection. Procession or walk to mural site will begin at 5:30ish. If possible, bring a small candle and flowers for our lost mural. We will have community and supporters speaking out against this displacement and erasure of our cultural and artistic heritage. Hope to see you there.
